On June 15, 2016, the Air Battle Uniform ( ABU) was authorized for wear. Until July 15, 2021, both the ABU and Battle Dress Uniform (BDU) will be authorized for wear. After July 15, 2021, the BDU will not be authorized for wear.
Which begs the question, what utility uniform should be worn?
Most of our members currently wear the BDU and our inventory of BDU’s will last years. While I can’t prohibit the wear of ABU’s, I am encouraging members to embrace uniformity and wear BDU’s at unit activities. That said, I will not be critical of those that choose to wear the ABU as it is an authorized uniform.
While new squadrons and small squadrons can quickly and economically transition to the ABU, this isn’t the case for larger squadrons. With limited squadron funding, transitioning to ABU’s is a low priority item for me.
If we obtain a large volume of ABU’s from the Air Force or other sources, I will revisit my views about the transition.
